Frontier's official Zoopedia lists 116 species for Planet Zoo 2 as of 24 September 2026: 48 habitat species, 32 aquarium species (31 of them are fish, sharks or rays), 9 fully flying birds and 41 exhibit species (some species live in more than one type of enclosure, so these add up to more than 116). Six of the 116 species come only with the Deluxe Edition. Frontier is adding new species every week in the run-up to the 13 October launch, so the final count is not known yet.

Our comparison

We checked all 116 species against Frontier's own Planet Zoo 1 Zoopedia by scientific name. Of these, 58 are also listed there and 4 are related subspecies or forms of Planet Zoo 1 animals. Another 53 are not in the Planet Zoo 1 Zoopedia. The remaining species, the Shoebill, is described by Frontier as a "franchise debut". Frontier also calls the Lion and Western Chimpanzee "familiar favourites". Those two phrases are Frontier's; all other Planet Zoo 1 classifications here are ours, based on comparing the two Zoopedias.

Planet Zoo 2 fish list: 31 fish, sharks and rays

Fully aquatic animals are new to the series: Frontier says they "make their debut" in Planet Zoo 2, living in custom freshwater or saltwater aquariums. The Zoopedia puts 32 species in aquariums. Of those, 31 are fish, sharks or rays; the other is the Hawksbill Turtle. Frontier lists 14 of the fish as both aquarium and exhibit species.

Flying birds

Fully flying birds are also new. The Zoopedia lists nine flying species: Eurasian Bittern, Golden Eagle, Great Hornbill, Long-Eared Owl, Secretarybird, Shoebill, Toco Toucan, White-Backed Vulture and White-Tailed Sea-Eagle. Common questions

How many animals are in Planet Zoo 2?

There are 116 as of 24 September 2026, counting the six Deluxe Edition species (Golden Eagle, Golden Lion Tamarin, Great Hammerhead, Axolotl, Blue and Gold Fusilier, Longfin Batfish). Frontier's Zoopedia says new animals appear every week before launch, and Frontier has not published a final number.

Are there lions in Planet Zoo 2?

Yes. The Lion is in the Zoopedia, and Frontier calls it, along with the Western Chimpanzee, one of the "familiar favourites" from the first game.

Will Planet Zoo 2 have dolphins or whales?

There are no cetaceans in the Zoopedia. Frontier's FAQ says it wants every animal to have an environment that reflects its needs, that research on cetacean conservation is ongoing, and that it is "keeping a close eye" on that work. Frontier has neither confirmed nor ruled them out.

Why do other lists show more animals?

Some fan lists include species that are not in Frontier's Zoopedia. On 24 September 2026, the Fandom wiki listed 121, including the Common Ostrich, Javan Green Magpie, Moon Jelly, West Indian Manatee and Wild Boar, none of which appear in the Zoopedia. We add a species here only when Frontier's Zoopedia lists it.

Will every Planet Zoo 1 animal come back?

Frontier has not said. So far, 58 of the 116 species are also in the Planet Zoo 1 Zoopedia. For other changes from the first game, see Planet Zoo 2 vs Planet Zoo.

When will habitat sizes and other requirements be added?

Habitat sizes, temperatures and group sizes have not been published yet. Frontier says the in-game Zoopedia will show each animal's requirements. We will add them after launch, using values read from the released game, not from trailers.
